If you help me with a mystery I promise to update something fun later this week involving Dickinson and video games. Personally, though, I love hidden treasures like these.
This book (the book itself, ignoring the initial publish date) is 156 years old:

It is simply titled, "Religious Lecture on Peculiar Phenomena in the Four Seasions: Delivered to the Students in Amherst College, In 1845, 1847, 1848, and 1849." by Rev. Edward Hitchcock D. D., LL.D., President of the College 1793-1863 and Professor of Natural Theology and Geology.
The first page behind the cover:

Reads:
To Maria: This Book speaks of the peculiar phenomena of Four seasons; the appended date will remind you of the peculiar phenomena of Seven Seasons, in which we have together roped (?) through “the resurrection of spring”, now(?) owell (?) under (?) “the triumphal arch of summer”, anticipate “the euthanasia of autumn, but rejoice to believe that “the coronation” will not be in “winter” but in a land of everlasting spring in our father’s House in Heaven. --Edmund Lenox, April 25, 1857 (signature)
I've always had a poor time reading cursive, hence the number of question marks. Please help!

And yes, that's a dog bite mark in the corner. That dog nearly died for the simple pleasures of chewing leather (unbeknowst to him, this 'leather' is now worth over $160.) |

| Dino weeping and T-Rex quotes the poet |

Sorry about the lack of updates. The creation of this journal sadly corresponded with some Dickinson research deadlines. I know you're upset--here's a comic to soothe your woeful heart.

A Dinosaur Comic--Featuring Emily Dickinson
For those of you who enjoy Dinosaur Comics by Ryan North.
The poem:
It's such a little thing to weep #220 ed. Franklin
It's such a little thing to weep — So short a thing to sigh — And yet — by Trades — the size of these We men and women die!
Critics haven't said much about this poem, so if you've got something to comment about, you should!
What are these? |
